Since its inception in 1996, Step by Step has become an invaluable resource to families affected by childhood disability. The respite and support parents receive from Step by Step is vital for their wellbeing and ability to function. Many parents have told us that Step by Step keeps them going, day by day.
The entire family benefits from the services Step by Step provides. The disabled child benefits by gaining skills, making friends and gaining a sense of achievement. Because the child will then come home happy from the sessions, the family benefits. Their child is easier to care for, will go to bed nicely and be less of a burden on the days he attends Step by Step activities.
In addition, having short bursts of respite on a regular basis, even just a couple of hours a day during the most hectic supper-homework-bath time rush, is essential for parents. Having this time off during crunch time enables them to be regular parents to their other kids.
We meet the needs of parents and families by providing respite during the busiest times- after school, weekends, school holidays, half terms and bank holidays. We regularly consult with parents/siblings to ensure that the activities we provide are what they and their child wants, at the times they want.
